Safety Audits
Safety
Audits
- help you comply with your OH&S "Duty of Care" or "Obligation"
- should form part of your company's OH&S policy and procedures
- are essential in preventing workplace injuries and workplace illnesses
- can increase your return on investment when conducted on a regular
basis
The safety audit process in the workplace is common for all types of
workplaces. A safety audit is a top-level, in-depth, comprehensive and
impartial investigation into all aspects of health and safety in a given
workplace.
A safety audit should be seen as an integrated aspect of the workplace.
A number of conditions need to exist for the maximum benefit to be gained
from an audit.
The safety audit process must have clear objectives and these should
be communicated to all levels of the organisation. The objective should
include the examination and qualitative assessment of all aspects of activities
such as:
Occupational
health
- Hygiene
- Research and development
- Product safety
- Community safety
- Production safety
- Induction and training processes
- Emergency procedures
- Standards and legal requirements
- Process changes
The
audit process is the responsibility of the employer, who should remain
actively involved through support and supervision.
Safety audits may be initiated by the Occupational Health & Safety
Consultant, Workplace Health & Safety Officer, Workplace Health &
Safety Representative, Workplace Health & Safety Committee. However,
to be most effective, they will require the support of the employer.
The audit process itself should be reviewed by management to ensure that
it is capable of attaining the objectives set and continues to meet the
requirements of the organisation.
Ron Atkinson Workplace Training & Assessment can design and
carry out safety audits at your workplace(s).
